Our electricity bill is paid quarterly, and is normally $150-$300 at worst. A new roommate moved in 3 months ago, and we just got the bill - and it's $680. This is a 3 BR apartment, with no AC and the only heating being in my room (which I've never turned on), and four people living there.

What the hell? I can't even imagine what appliance would do that. We have a washing machine which is newish, no dryer, a fridge, and an electric stove/oven. I've got a TV which I rarely use, and he's got one which he probably constantly uses. All our lightbulbs are the energy-saving type, and there aren't even that many lamps in the apartment.

The only thing I can think of is the water heater, which is electric and has a brand new tank. As soon as he moved in we kept running out of hot water every night (he told us he had a job, but would always be home when anyone got home and say he came home from lunch or left early). I have no idea how he was using all the hot water every day, but he went away for two weeks and suddenly our water was fine again.

Is there anything else that could use so much electricity? We also replaced the fridge, but it was ancient and now we have a new one. I do sometimes find that someone left the door a bit ajar, but even so...

Edit: guys, he's not mining Bitcoin or anything like that. There's no way he'd be able to figure that out; he was astounded when I replaced the router in the apartment. Also, he's got a small room and it would be extremely obvious.

Edit 2: turns out everyone had bought space heaters without me knowing. Mystery solved 🤦🏻‍
