I recently started my first DIY project to give my dog a grass patch on the balcony. I have tried the mail ordered fresh grass patches and the artificial grass patches but neither are really suitable for him. We take him for walks regularly a couple of times a day but he needs to use the bathroom quite a bit. I made a large 2x4 box from treated wood which I then added some water resistant stain to.. I used a pegboard screwed to the box as a base and then lined the entire inside (walls and base) with 2 layers of thick plastic sheeting and stapled it to hold it in place. I then added 5 bags of soil which i then made sure it was all broken down with no clumps. I watered the soil and then placed on top a roll of fresh sod which I have been watering and keeping my dog off for a few days to help it attach.I have now realised after stumbling across another post that the box may need some sort of drainage. I'm not sure if does and if it does, I'm not sure how to go about doing this. The only part of the balcony that has drainage falls directly from the front of my balcony onto the neighbors below.I'm currently living in downtown Toronto, and the balcony is covered by balcony above so it doesn't really get wet during the rain, which rarely seems to happen in Ontario. I moved here a couple of years ago from Belfast, I'm still quite unsure on if any special issues arise in regards to the grass box from the drastic changes in weather that Ontario experiences throughout the year.Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated as my knowledge of gardening is very limited to simple tasks. Thanks! The box before the plastic sheeting went inThe wee nuisance I'm making the grass box for via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2C7T28F
