Preface with I have spent enough time looking at DIY deck build posts to know the basics. I have really just one major question:Plan is 14' x 12' "floating" deck in my backyard. Will be approx 24" high. I want to incorporate a Pergola. My thought was to do a 12x12 Pergola on the 14x12 deck. Will dig 48" holes (Michigan is location), use sonotubes and fill with concrete. Simpson brackets on top for the posts. My plan was to use 4"x4" posts for all posts except the 4 posts associated with the Pergola and use 6"x6". My question is that on the normal 4"x4" posts ill use a post cap and place a pair of 2"x8" beams across. However, since I want to incorporate the 6"x6" in the pergola I cannot use a post cap. Is it safe to have the beams attach via hangers or bolted to the side of the post? Is it better to just do a full 4x4 post for all bases and then incorporate, seperate, the 6x6 for the pergola?Hopefully this makes sense, thanks for any guidance. via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2LfyslL
