Hi all, frequent lurker here in need of some advice on patio building. I am planning to build a small, elevated, 6'x7' patio to access my bigger floor level terasse via a sliding door (already in place). My house has brick walls which cover the floor joists. I was pretty much set on not anchoring the patio to the house, instead building a standalone patio resting on 4 helical piers. It seems to me this would be much simpler and less of a hassle than to setup a ledger beam. Not to mention eleminating the risk of water damage to the house. Thing is, when talking to my dad/helper, he quickly turned down the idea and wanted to anchor a ledger either into the concrete foundation of the house or through the brick wall, without removing bricks. He's much more experiencrd than me and a pretty good carpenter, but I could use some advice here. Thanks. Also, this is a stick house located in Quebec, Canada.Tl;dr building a small patio. Floor joists covered by brick wall. Better to build a standalone on 4 helical piers or to setup a ledger on the concrete foundation ?See this Imgur album for pictures of the location (disregard the shoddy electrical work of the P.O. it is in the process of being fixed) https://ift.tt/2wcXBIn via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2MmjbVU
