We bought our house last year for $100,000. Our property taxes are $3,000 a year after tax credits. Which I think is ridiculous in its self.

We just got a letter in the mail that our new property value for 2018 is $215,000! Which raises our taxes from $3,000 a year to $6,300. There is absolutely no way our house is worth $215,000. There hasn't been a single sale in our neighborhood over $130,000 ever, even before the recession. We had a meeting with the county assessor and it was pretty much "that sucks" they are unwilling to help us because the information as far as sqft, lot size, etc. is correct. We certainly can't afford over $500 a month just in property taxes on a $100,000 house. All of my neighbors are having the same problem. Including a house on my street that was bought for $50,000 a month ago due to water damage. It's new value is $190,000.

Is there anything we can do here? We even submitted our appraisal from last year and they declined it. Is there anything we can do here or are we SOL since the county seems unwilling to cooperate? Would it be best to hire a lawyer? Thanks!

Just to add, our street is directly next to a private university. The university sent letters to our entire street about 6 months ago wanting to purchase every house on the street to build a football field. They successfully bought 6 houses out of around 30 and demolished all 6. They were offering $65,000 when we had just bought it for $100,00. We declined and they did not attempt to negotiate. We got a new offer last week for $72,000. Which we are also going to decline. This may be completely unrelated, but it definitely seems strange to me. Our street is the only possible way they could build a football field. Could this be an attempt by the county to force our hand to sell to the university? Or would this likely be completely unrelated?
