I work in an office that is open 24/7, 365; this means I work overnights and most weekends. Because the work volume can be unpredictable, we are encouraged to pick up extra hours when possible. I am an hourly employee (I currently make just south of $16/hr) so I am compensated accordingly. When we hit 45 hours, we start to make time and a half.
The problem is that our work week runs from 12:00 am Monday - 11:59 pm Sunday. My shift is 5 pm - 3 am, so the last 3 hours of every Sunday shift roll over to the next week. Last week, I worked 51 hours (7 hours of OT). But because the last 3 rolled over to this week as regular hours, I’ll only get credited for 4 hours of OT, missing out on $24 that I rightfully earned (assuming I choose not to work extra this week and don’t hit the 45 required for OT).
It sounds petty to fight over $24, but I’m mostly annoyed because anyone else in the office who worked the same 51 hours as me would have been paid in full, as I am one of only a handful in the building that works after midnight. I emailed our business office but it looks like nothing can be done. I’m working the same number of hours (and more) than everyone else, but not being paid in full simply because I work an overnight shift (not by choice). Do I have any options here?
