My wife drove to a park to walk the dog and someone smashed her car window and stole her purse (she says it was hidden under the sunshade), she was only gone ~15 minutes. She called the cops, me, then called and reported her debit card stolen. I got there (maybe 30 minutes after the theft) and called to report the credit cards stolen. Within that time they hit two grocery stores and spent $3k+ with a CC (gift cards I'm assuming), those purchases have since been removed as expected. Cops were notified and after they finished at the scene they went to the store to check the security footage. We dealt with insurance and figured that was that...
Two days later my wife notices a couple huge pending withdrawals from her checking and savings accounts (we just had our wedding reception and all the gift money was in there so it was more than usual), calls the bank customer service, and they say there were two withdrawals made that day from two different banks. Bank first said they used a check (no checks in the purse or anywhere else), then said they must have known her pin (for a stolen card? and it was not written down or easy to guess), and are now saying they used a driver's license and they must have looked like her (what?). We've talked to three different people including going to the bank to discuss, they basically say they're looking into it but it could take 60 days to resolve.
Has anyone else dealt with this? Is there anything else we can do? What else should we have done to prevent this? Can someone really withdraw money from a bank with just a driver's license? The only reason we're not screwed is because we haven't combined finances yet but after this I'm definitely keeping accounts open at multiple banks.
