I have a relatively common name, or at least not uncommon, and I just opened an account for electricity. The power company tacked on an extra $120 to my bill and called it an "adjustment" with no further explanation. I inquired and they told me it was the balance from my other account with them. They gave me the account name (duh) and an address, and not much more.
I check my credit regularly, take other reasonable precautions, and haven't had any incidents anywhere else. I am fairly certain it is not identity theft. I basically told them they are fucking idiots and that it was just a billing error. They refuse to correct the mistake and insist that I have to file all kinds of identity theft crap now: an affidavit, a police report, plus identity stuff like W2, tax return, a letter from employer (wtf) and other stuff.
The amount itself isn't going to make me or break me, but it's still $120 and it pisses me off that they won't correct the mistake. I'm really frustrated and don't know what to do - besides jump through their massively inconvenient hoops that will take months to settle, I'm sure. Any suggestions?
