If I do community service at an organization like a church, am I allowed to use them as a reference when applying for a job?

Basically the title. A few years ago I did community service at a church once a week for several months. Now, I know there are some things that you shouldn't use as references (Friends, family members, ect.) but, assuming I ask them (The church) if It's okay and they agree, would that still fall under something you shouldn't normally use as a reference?
