Is it better to buy a "new" used car and drive it into the ground, or trade it in after a few years while it still has some value and hasn't started needing major work done.

I'm an HVAC guy so consequently, I always have a work van given to me and I just use my wife's car if I need to go anywhere on weekends. I might change jobs though and I might need a car. Just wondering if it is better to trade in every few years or drive cars til they are heeps.
