I'm trying to buy a used car after my old one was totaled.
My instinct is to stay away from private parties, because it seems like I'd have fewer protections there-- it seems like it would be a lot easier to return a car to the dealership (and potentially pursue action) if something happened (car immediately breaks, something crops up that they obviously hid, etc.) It seems like it'd be pretty hard to track down some rando on Craigslist if they sold me a bad car.
On the other hand, I reaaaaally hate dealing with dealerships. I don't know a lot about cars and I'm a young woman so it makes it really hard for me to be confident when talking to dealers.
What have your experiences been with buying used cars? Do you prefer dealerships or private parties?
