this may not be the right place to post this; if not, please let me know and if you can recommend a better sub, by all means, please do!so we just started a bathroom remodel as a result of a leak behind the shower, about which i've posted here before.the project was supposed to start yesterday but was delayed until tomorrow because the mold company's lab result wasn't in yet, and they wouldn't come out. the contractor was right on time, but the mold company didn't have the result so they wouldn't come out as scheduled till it came in. (obviously since we were aware of a leak, we knew we ran the risk of mold, so remediation is the first step in the process.)my questions are thus (and i've already signed everything so i can't go back in time, but i'm just wondering about the following for my own peace of mind and further education):1) they found high levels of toxic mold and are going to be demoing until they get at least two feet out from all signs of it. i totally expect this to end up impacting the wet wall downstairs (this is an upstairs bathroom); how likely am i to be correct?1b) should i expect them to also find mold growing in the walls into my son's bedroom and closet (the latter of which shares a wall with the wet wall in his bathroom)?2) they found asbestos and lead as well (and this required me to sign an addendum to pay an additional $1600 for remediation of that as well - mold company wouldn't agree to even come out unless i agreed to that additional charge). however -2a) they found this in the tile and paint (i also believe the office manager said the drywall), in a room that wasn't even built until 2005. is it normal for modern paint and tile to carry asbestos and lead?2b) i read the report and it indicates <1% asbestos and <.01% lead. wouldn't this be considered normal trace amounts? does it actually need to be remediated, or is the mold company (very high reviews, by the way; selected by the contractor, but lauded) screwing us?again, what's done is done at this point, but i ask because that exact same tile is throughout the house (travertine), and so is the paint, as well as the drywall. so should i expect this surprise charge being a part of future renovations, or should i look with narrowed eyes at future vendors who tell me it has to be remediated? because we do intend to eventually replace all this tile - which is in: the kitchen, the dining room, the laundry room, an upstairs bathroom, and which lines an upstairs shower?any insight would be super helpful and appreciated and again, if this doesn't go here (and it probably doesn't), please let me know and i'll be happy to nuke it.thanks in advance, as always, for your knowledge and expertise. also, sorry for the length.btw, if you have any insight into what we should do with the knowledge that my [>18] son has been inhaling high levels of toxic mold for probably years, that would be helpful as well. he does have an occasional cough that sounds like a smoker's cough when it happens, which i have been wondering about for quite awhile, but which my husband has said is probably the result of smoking pot. however, he's a very occasional smoker (a couple of times a month, max - we're honest about this and live in a state where it's legal), and i know people who smoke daily without said cough. so i am inclined at this point to DEFINITELY believe his cough is the result of the mold... but what exactly do we do with that at this point?(i am really taking advantage of this sub's kindness at this point, i realize. i think precisely none of my questions go here, but as DIYers, i'm wondering if anyone has ever run into any of this.)edited to add drywall to the list of fuckery, as i just recalled that being mentioned as well. via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2BYOtfW
