I'm looking for a backpack, and my main issue is that i am infinitely picky, and every one i find is almost sorta close to what i want but happens to be missing x or y or its way too z. stop reading now if you dont want to read a long list of infuriatingly specific specifics.

what im looking for is a backpack with EXTREMELY good organization. like, ridiculous amounts. my issue right now is that i have a bunch of teeny small items that get lost in the bottom of my bag or theres no where good to put them that leaves them in easy access, and there ends of being wayyy too much unused space.

also i just checked and my bookmarks folder with backpacks ive found has, 94 links, so im not gonna post all of those, how the fuck did i even manage to find 94 backpacks and still none of them are perfect whats wrong with me,

So first off my criteria, which by this point i assume im gonna have to settle for 50% of the list:

  • price: id prefer to spend not too much over $100, but feel free to suggest slightly pricier ones if they happen to be otherwise perfect or i might be able to find them on sale/on ebay or whatever.

  • durable: duh, im asking on bifl. my main backpack i keep coming back to is an under armor one, got it when i was 10ish because it was purple, and its definitely held up way better than the 3 backpacks ive gone through trying to find a new one, but i dont like the internal setup for what i need (though it makes a GREAT travel pack, so ill def be keeping it). i at least want something that lasts me like old reliable has instead of falling apart, probably 10 years now.

  • looks nice: obviously extremely subjective, but some of the packs i find the main thing putting me off is theyre ugly as all hell. itd be hard for me to describe my style so if youre have no idea whether id call it ugly or not go ahead. i can do anything from fairly plain and inconspicuous (like boring black/gray), to covered in glitter rainbows and neon unicorns, to military chic, to ugly on purpose 80s, to hiker style, to classic school look, whatever, less saying "give me bags that look like..." and more "if you know one you personally think looks really nice..."

  • not gigantic: the north face surge for example is maybe a little bigger than id want but tolerable. id prefer something smaller if possible, but most of the hyper-organized backpacks i can find are huge, but since im looking for more "a bunch of well placed small pockets to hold small items" the pack itself doesn't need to be ginormous.

  • organized, organized, organized. i look up "organized backpack" and find peoples idea of organized is "one large main compartment and an organization panel". yeah, i need a lil more than that.

As for my way too long wish list of organization:

  • id like it if theres 3 main pockets- two large open pockets for books/papers (maybe one with a laptop sleeve, padded or unpadded) and one thats an organization panel pocket. ones like this include the north face surge, swiss gear 6681 (though i prefer the exact organization panel configuration of the surge, the swiss gear is acceptable)

  • smaller outside pockets like on the kenneth cole pack of all trades or jansport watchtower, because they keep small items easily accessible and out of the way, ones literally the size of a coin purse/wallet are nice. obvious external or hiddenish internal, w/e

  • small external tech pocket: dunno what theyre actually called but, the ones that are fleece/other soft material lined on the top of the pack that are great for throwing your cellphone in, sometimes have headphone cord holes, see p much every one ive linked so far

  • slim pockets in main compartments: wanted but not necessary, usually these are meant to be laptop/tablet pockets, sometimes theyre be "filing cabinet" type pockets, either way theyre great for keeping things like notebooks separate neat and upright. jansport hatchet shows some with a tablet+laptop in bottom pic

  • emphasis on horizontal as opposed to vertical organization: meaning instead of having 5 slim compartments like here it has more short horizontal pockets like again the jansport watchtower. so, short and fat not tall and slim, because the tall and slim is great for things like papers or notebooks, but smaller things just fall to the bottom and theres all that wasted space above.

  • on that note im a fan of the ones that have a bottom compartment like here usually called a shoe compartment, but im not gonna be using it for shoes, i just like the layout cause it keeps certain items both out of the way and easily accessible

  • COMPLETELY optional, but cool, INTERNAL molle system. i also think i might be able to juryrig something on another pack, but if you got any that already have this then neat.

and im aware my list is excessive, this isnt even all of it cause i will nitpick every single detail, but id really like a bag that hits as many points here as possible, i doubt ill find something with zero compromise.

and i guess some bags that i found and have liked but not enough:

  • burton hcsc scout, which i loved until i realized how different the current version was from the one i saw in the video and that they changed a few of my favorite parts like swapping the front pocket for a laptop sleeve (also note, burtons product images are shit, show me the inside of the backpack you motherfuckers thats what im here for)

  • Tom Bihn synapse 19 there are so many things i love about this one, the price tag is not one of them. even on ebay there arnt many options. still, good example of great organization in a small package

  • north face surge cool, but just slightly off from what i actually want in ways thatd be hard to go into detail on, mostly nitpicks

anyway, if anyone has any packs within my budget that will suit my intolerably picky personality without falling apart in two weeks, im all ears.
