Hi PF, my dad, 49, died in his sleep today and I could really use some help. I know people have posted here with similar situations before, I'm having trouble finding those posts so links to them would be really helpful too. My personal situation:
I'm a 20 year old male and my sister is 18. We're both in college. I woke up to find my dad had passed in his sleep. Police were called, ambulances and the fire dept. came and now, 6 hours later, my sister and I are safe at our biological mom's house. A funeral home already came and took his body. My step mom and I are planning funeral arrangements now.
My dad didn't have a will. My step mom, me and sister will work that out I think, but we are all on good terms so it shouldn't be an issue.
I think he might have had a little life insurance, but I don't know how to find that out or if that is part of his estate or not.
He had lots of credit card, car, mortgage debt etc. He made enough to eventually pay it all off, but we didn't expect him to go so soon. I'm not sure if his savings or checking account goes to his estate to pay down his debt or what.
His overall health had been going down hill for some time, so it isn't like this is completely out of the blue, but it still sucks. I don't know if anyone can use his bad health against him (physical, not mental) against him to claim or deny something.
I'm from the northeast if that matters. I'm lucky to have a large family supporting me and my sister now. I've followed this sub for a long time and all of you have been amazing to those in need. Any help at all would mean the entire world to me. Thank you.
Edit: Thank you to everyone who responded. Your advice/links have given me some good starting places. I know we all experience death and I realize a story like this is posted every now and again on this sub, but in the moment it feels good to know many of you care. My best wishes to all of you.
