Hello all, removing tile as a part of a slowly evolving renovation and I'm a little perplexed as to just how this tile is installed, some photos here for inspection: http://ift.tt/2D4YTbp I can't figure out is what the layers are. The sub-floor is concrete, it then looks like there's a layer of construction adhesive (or some sort of adhesive that would yellow), then a very thin layer of ...paper, cement board, something? then mastic (I think), then tile. You can see in the pictures where the tile is turned over the layer of adhesive (ultimately that's what's left on the subfloor), and then in the 3rd picture there's a clear interface between what seems like rolls / sheets of whatever the underlayment is (that spans across multiple tiles, so it's not that each tile just has this backing). This is my first time removing tile and I can't find any examples online of tile installed this way. I found that backerboard is common when installing tile, but all of those seem to be 1/4", 1/2" etc. The underlayment here is barely 1/32". Just curious if anyone else can recognize what the actual process was - and if there's anything special to watch out for when removing. Thanks <3Edit: Holy crap is this how all posts in DIY go? This is the most help I've ever gotten for ..anything. It would take a little too long to make sure that I personally said thanks to everyone so here's a sincere and appreciated thank you to all of your for your answers and help!I suspect the linoleum / vinyl backing with tile over it theory is correct. And for anyone concerned about asbestos in the adhesive or "underlayment", the house was built in 2003 so I think we're relatively safe on that. If I develop mesothelioma though, I'll know exactly who to call. via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2mbjELi
