Recently saw a post about a crazy electric bill in this subreddit and would like to share my own experience to try and get a lil advice.

Recently moved into an apartment in a 10 story building. All utilities covered except electric and cable (fairly standard). One bedroom, about 950 sq feet. I moved in Dec 14th, then left to go visit family from Dec 15th-Jan 2nd. Had my heat set to 60 while gone, all lights off.. you know, typical stuff when you’re gonna be gone for a couple weeks.

Came home on the 2nd, set the heat to 69 (heh) for the majority of the time. Probably 25-35 degrees on average. Got hit with a crazy cold wave for a few days, high of 5 degrees those days so set my heat to like 71 to stay comfy in a tee. Temp raised back to the 30s so back down to 69 normally. So, from Jan 2nd-Jan 14th it was at like 69/70 degrees most of the time. Only two weeks of energy usage, watching tv, playing video games, lounging around.. However, I got my first meter reading on the 14th only to find I’ve “used” 1700 kilowatt hours?! My bill is over $400 and this DOES NOT seem correct. The electric providers website has a usage section and even compares neighbors usage to mine, and there is a 1000kwh difference. The average usage of my neighbors around me is around 500kwh, and I’m sure they’re setting the temp to around the same as I am considering th winter conditions. However, the site does not offer an hourly, or even a daily, usage chart! I have not contacted anyone yet, as I’ve been fairly busy, but I haven’t paid the bill yet either (not due for a few more weeks).

How the hell am I using 1000kwh more than everyone else in my building? Something seems very wrong here.
