My husband I just bought a new house, and my father is pushing us to get a home alarm system. There’s a deal through ADT where they provide “up to $800” worth of equipment if you sign up for the service for three years at $29/mo. Hubs and I both grew up with alarm systems in our houses, and it’s hard to say if they were actually useful—no one ever tried to break in, and the one I had growing up malfunctioned pretty regularly. I don’t have any qualms about our neighborhood because I’ve been living in the city my entire adult life, but my (suburban, lovingly anxious) dad is worried about crime. I generally feel like, we lock everything up at night and we have a dog that would bark at intruders, so we’re covered. Does an alarm system provide any value besides peace of mind? Would having one lower our insurance rates or increase our resale value? Is it worth $29/mo to get my father off my back? Thanks.
