I am looking to add some real estate to my portfolio in the future so I am doing as much research as possible. I read sources that argued real estate is a good diversification tool for a portfolio. I am already heavily diversified with total market, emerging markets, and ex US markets. Those sources also pointed out that real estate usually has a negative correlation with bonds and varying correlation with stocks. As a result, I have a couple questions. I could not find any sources saying what the correlation value is. In fact, I have yet to see a comprehensive source that shows all asset classes' correlations. You think that would be a must read for investors! Does anyone have any sources on at least real estate correlations? Another quesrion I had was about REITs vs personal real estate investing. Are there any statistics or does anyone have personal experience with the historical rate of return on REITs vs real estate management. I tend to be an invest and leave it guy, but I have been looking into BiggerPockets about real estate investing. However, it seems like REITs make a similar return for a lot less hassle.
