Hi Personal Finance. This is my first post, but I believe I am about to be fired from my full time remote position, and I have questions about how that would work with claiming unemployment.

The place I am working for has been giving me less and less work to do, and it is seeming like the end may be very near for me. I haven’t done anything wrong, so I am doubtful that they would try to “fire me with cause” in order to prevent me from accessing unemployment. I just want to make sure I do everything correctly from a financial perspective.

Firstly, if I am “asked/given the opportunity to resign” should I do that, or will that hurt my chances of collecting unemployment?

Second, the state my employer is in is New York, but I live in Idaho. Will this make collecting unemployment difficult, or does the state not matter?

Lastly, I have accrued PTO days, based on my research, a NY company is required to pay those out, but Idaho law doesn’t seem to protect that. Which state’s rules would apply?

Are there any other tips for dealing with a firing that would be good to know in advance?

Thanks so much!
