Hello reddit DIY community!I made a new account because I want to surprise my GF with a DIY foldable table, and because she knows my true reddit profile, I do not want to risk ruining the surprise for her.Disclaimer, I am a newbie and I do not know any special terms used for materials or mechanisms, so I might sound weird. The whole idea is to have a foldable table in my room, so she can enjoy her working table real estate when she works at my place and for me to still be able to free up space when she does not, also this table can be used for dinner and similar activities or even a friend coming over for a gaming night.I did a paint sketch. (sorry for the few instances of bad hand writing)What I am asking for are a few things:Should I use those hinges, they are high quality and wide and probably for door use, but not with much depth, they do have bearings which make their movement feel very soft and of a high quality, they are this type just not from homedepot and they look much sturdy, as they are very heavy. Also, I must position the legs like that because of folding, I guess it does not matter and will not affect the balance, but I was wondering about the quality and the type of these ebay models of hinge connector mechanisms, I am not sure if its worth for me to try making my own mechanism as I have 0 experience in anything like this, I am also not sure which ones to get and if I should get them in the first place, I have no idea what is the best type, here are the models. For the top I use plywood, not sure if its ok, but it is 25mm thick, and I might only reach 15kg max load ever (probably not, but let's have those numbers there), the primary use for it will be drawing (along with other architect stuff like crafting suff), laptop use and a lot of ankle resting. If you have any other recommendations please let me know. The legs, I am planning wood, I wanted metal, but I am still not sure. What strong wood will not have some crazy maintenance (I am not familiar with woodworking and woodcare), so what is a good wood for this scenario which will not require too much maintenance and will be cost efficient too?I am also not sure of how much sturdy it will be, I was guessing the door hinges are good even tho they do not go more deeply to the table top, just on the edges, but maybe I should consider something of that type, like this or even more deep or just another type of a hinge? Can this project succeed, what other tips do you guys have? Will the balance of this table considering it's dimensions like I listed them in the paint sketch make sense?I was thinking of just straight buying foldable table, maybe wooden, or my current idea with another type of mechanism (like I drew in my sketch) so again, if you have any recommendations let me know.Thank you very much and I am sorry for any typos/grammar or weird explaining I might have done. via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2j8ms9T
