I am starting a small project on my basement shower, and am not sure of the best way to proceed due to my lack of experience on this type of work. The tl;dr of it is that the ceiling and walls in my bathroom suck, which includes the space above my shower stall, and I'd like to at least fix the shower section.I (normally) use this bathroom/shower myself, so I'd like it to at least be usable. The walls and ceiling above my shower stall are old wood paneling. I am tall, and the shower is kind of short, so I'm afraid of water splashing up and the wood deteriorating, or mold growing. After I bought the house, I taped some clear painter's tarp over the top of the shower and a few inches down onto the stall to keep that from happening, but I'd like a better solution. It really doesn't need to look good, or even match the rest of the bathroom; I would just like it to be functional. My initial idea was to use spackling over the wood paneling to completely cover it, which would give me a nice smooth(ish) surface free of big crevices like there are now. I would then sand it down, put a layer or two of mold killing primer over it, and paint it with high-gloss paint. The thing that initially made me hesitate before starting was seeing the edges of the stall, which previously had wood moulding over it. I'm not sure what to do there. Maybe put latex caulk over it? I was thinking I shouldn't just put the spackling over it because the small movements in the stall would crack it over time. Here are some pictures of the area above the stall, the area right outside of it where there is a bit more edge to deal with, and some of the materials I have on hand to work with (I can always get other materials, and I also have both latex and silicone caulking for tubs): http://ift.tt/2gjRj5P'd love to hear input or suggestions from those of you with more experience and knowledge than me. If you need more pictures or details, let me know and I can get them up quickly. Thanks! via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2yioOMK
