I’m going to be having serious issues with budgeting, housing, credit, and employment.
I graduated top of my class in high school, but my single mother asked me not to go straight to college because she would need help around the house. Regrettably, I stayed and within a few months she was asking me for rent $. Understandable, but $200 soon turned to $500, as well as paying for groceries for both of us and food for all 3 of the dogs and her cat. Only one of the dogs is mine, and I’m scared to leave her behind because my mom has previously mentioned KILLING her just to hurt me.
for quick facts • I turned 21 last week • I’m enrolled full time in a community college that’s 80 miles one way away from me (it’s a long story on why- but please just know it was necessary) • the car she lets me use as transportation only gets 15 mpg and she doesn’t want to trade it in for something more fuel efficient • I only have a weekend job making $100-200 biweekly •I currently have $700 in my savings • I have $200 in checking • $1400 owed on my credit card with a limit of $1500
My mother is moving out of state for a job and her new boyfriend. He doesn’t want me to be there, and she doesn’t either which I guess I understand.
Problem #1 Housing: She refuses to co-sign a lease for me so I would be approved. My credit score is a 482 due to my own credit card and having a unpaid water bill that had gotten to $3000 in my name since I was 13 years old. Even though I sent them a copy of my birth certificate, they refused to take it off my credit score until I pressed charges against my mother. Quite frankly, she’s abusive and I’m terrified of her so I just saved money for a year or two and paid it off. However, my credit is still recovering and my high balance isn’t helping it.
I want to move to Raleigh/Cary/Durham NC, which is about an hour away from me. I’ve joined groups for off campus housing, but almost all of the listings require a sublease with complete lease take over which is (obviously) not an option. I posted a listing on CL, but 90% of the 50ish responses were men asking me to be their live in girlfriend... ew.
Problem #2 Credit: 482 credit score, 90%+ used on my credit card. I don’t have the $ to pay this down right now, and I don’t know what to do about it. My monthly minimum payment is $50ish dollars, and I usually pay about $70-$80 on it. My credit and debit card are both with Navy Federal.
Problem #3 Living, Transportation, School: I’ve been hoarding necessities in my room for a year or so — toilet paper, shampoo, tooth paste, trash bags, canned goods, kitchen utensils, a microwave, you name it. I even have 6 months worth of dog food hoarded, and I pulled favors and signed up for free clinics so my dog is UTD on shots until 2019.
However, when I move I won’t have any transportation. She’s already said I can’t keep the truck. And I can’t afford a vehicle payment + car insurance + gas + upkeep along with rent with my skill level. I’ve checked bus routes, but I’m not sure how I would be able to afford $3.75 a day either, or be able to fit adequate work hours into my schedule with the long bus rides.
I want to ask my school for a loan, but I’m already on financial aid warning because I had a depressive episode last semester and completely folded on my school work. I’m currently on antidepressants, and I don’t even know how I would pay for those either.
Please help. I have no idea what to do and where to start. I’m feeling incredibly overwhelmed, but I’m trying to look at this at a final start to a life that’s worth living, one that’s truly my own and away from my “mother” in a city that I love.
