Came across Sankey diagrams recently and made one for our 2016 finances : here.
It really helped us get a big picture overview of where our money is coming from and where it is going - hope the idea helps others as well.
I used our W2s for income/tax data; we've been using Mint diligently to track expenses and a free tool I found to create the diagram. The numbers in the image are mostly illustrative to show the example.
