Hi all

First let me preface this by saying I live in Australia so I understand the cost of living is somewhat different but I'm hoping for some generalist advice.

I am almost 28, work part time and rent a townhouse on my own. I work for an airline (at the airport, not a flight attendant) and I am guaranteed 20 hours/week but I oftentimes get rostered 26-28 hours. This means my pay fluctuates depending on the hours I work and of course penalty shifts (weekends and particular times of the day attract more money). I like the nature of my job because I get positively reinforced for working hard/longer hours.

Anyway, my gross income per fortnight averages (this is as close as I can estimate) $1300. I didn't want to make this about my budget but what I wanted to ask is how do you know if you're earning enough? I know that this can be completely subjective and I know some people are happy to just have the bills paid, but at my age I'm feeling the pressure (from society) to have piles of money in savings (which I don't have) against the fact that I'm quite happy to be plodding along.

I'd be happy to provide my expenses etc but is it ok to just live the cycle of simply working to exist? I would hate to think I'm doing ok in life only to wake up one day with a huge reality check realising I'm not. I am trying desperately to cut down some bills and expenses but at this stage I am unable to save a single dollar.

Any advice would I'd be so grateful for.
