Not sure if this is the right place to ask this. Got a hole in my drywall that I'm trying to patch and fix. I've cut a square, taped the edges and all.My question is regarding the application of mud (joint compound). Going through videos on YouTube, the general consensus seems to coat and feather edges 6-8 inches out. After the 2nd coat is applied to the edges, around the 3rd or 4th coat I see that they also mud all of the patch - the center area where there is no mud. Is this done to ensure the patch is level and seamless transition with the surrounding drywall?I don't see the center areas being mudded on new installations for a Q2/3 finish, the edges are taped and mudded. Only for Q4 or higher finish, the mud is applied to all the surface of the drywall. Could this be another reason that patches are also entirely mudded to reach a Q4 finish? What I want to know essentially is: If you I were to put in a very large patch, as a best practice do I mud the entire patch or not? Why? via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2wqLHsC
