Hi!
Thanks to the Mint app making me aware of some funny fees, I discovered a Western Union money transfer on my Discover account for $160.00 (plus a $10 cash advance fee and $2 minimum interest fee). Knowing I haven't used my Discover card for Western Union, or Western Union in general, I disputed the charge. Discover customer service was very friendly, cancelled the card, opened an investigation, etc.
They called me this morning to let me know that the charge was done via the internet, and there was 2 factor authentication - basically they had to verify the charge via text or a voice call. The charge happened at 2am on a Tuesday night, and I was very much asleep at the time. I checked my phone records, and I don't have a text message or call from the time that makes sense.
I'm very confused - I pressed the investigator, and she's opening another stage to the inquiry, which will apparently take 30 days or so? The jist of our discussion, though, was that since there was a second identifier authorizing the transaction, I am liable for the charges.
I'll eat the $172 if I must, but I'm concerned.
My questions for PF: 1) Is it possible that a fraudulent transaction occurred with this 2-factor authentication, or am I literally going insane? 2) What can I do to make my card more secure moving forward?
My Chase Platinum was also compromised around the same time frame on this trip, but that was just a multitude of small $1.00 transactions and they were all reversed, if that's relevant.
Thanks for all your wisdom!!
