Dog has been limping for the past two weeks on back right leg, took her to the veterinarian and paid $500(!) for sedatives, X-rays, pain and anti inflammatory meds. She's a black lab mix, ~6 years old, 30lbs. Vet said maybe torn ACL or meniscus, reason fee was so high was she had X-rays sent to the radiology lab to confirm one way or another but likely ACL.

The plan is to have her on pain meds for next 1-2 weeks, very low activity and see if leg starts to improve. If it doesnt, we were told that within next 6 months would need to do surgery to reach a complete recovery. She quoted us $2,500 - $3K for that procedure.

Basic google research said this would be in the $1,500 range - we live in NYC which would explain some of the extra cost - but does anyone have any insight/recommendations/knowledge of this kind of situation? My first idea was obtaining all the X-rays and information and reaching out for a quote from a vet in a rural area where we have family.

We have a baby due to arrive in November and this cost is a tough blow, possibly looking at payment plan putting us in debt.

For those curious we suspect she sustained the injury trying to jump up onto our bed (her favorite place in the apartment) while we were out, a jump we've witnessed her fail at before which resulted in her crashing down onto the floor :'(
