Yesterday my car stopped working while I was driving on the highway. I had it towed to my mechanic, who said it was futile to invest in repairs (car is over 20 years old, nearly 200,000 miles, and has multiple issues). The good news is that my brother and his fiancé are moving back to the area and are willing to sell me one of their cars. The problem is that they do not get here until next week.
At the moment, I'm staying at my dad's house watching his dog. This is good because it is close to where I work. My next shift isn't until Friday, however, and I have a lot to do between now and then. I have an internship that requires field work, and I am unable to get to my research sites. All my field supplies are either at my place or in my car. I have a therapy appointment tomorrow evening, and I'm participating in a research study at my university the following day (it's paid, thankfully). Everything else I need to do, while important and time sensitive, are lower on my list of priorities.
I have nearly $4,000 in savings. I'm scared I will have to spend a good chunk of this on a new car. I haven't paid tuition yet for the fall semester, and that's something like $1,000. I already denied the student loans I was awarded and only accepted grants.
My budget is going to be very tight for awhile. I need transportation, but don't want to spend a lot of money taking an Uber everywhere. The Metro will not take me close enough to where I need to go, and I don't have the time to be spending two hours on a train every day anyway. What's the best way to get around without sacrificing a lot of time and money?
