My downstairs bathroom needs some work. Specifically, the shower, light/fan, and medicine cabinet need to be replaced, there's crumbling drywall and I suspect the wall behind the shower is water damaged, and it's missing baseboards and trim. Oh, and things like towel racks, toilet paper holder, and fresh paint.I'm basically a home reno newbie. I can do basic plumbing repairs(swapping fixtures, snaking drains etc), patch small holes, and last week I replaced a melted electrical outlet, but I've never undertaken anything like this.I'm not moving any wiring or plumbing, and I'm planning on swapping the shower with one that's the exact same dimensions, so it shouldn't mess up the floor. The toilet is fine and the sink itself is good, though I'll update the faucet. I'm hoping that by keeping things simple and straightforward, it should be manageable. The thing that I'm most concerned about is the shower. I don't know if it has water shut offs, and if the wall behind is damaged or rotted, it's going to be a while before the new on gets installed. Are there shut offs I can install at the shower so I can turn the water back on at the main shutoff? Also, what do I do about the potential water damage behind the shower? Since its a pretty tight space, I imagine it'll be easier to work in there with the shower out. Is it ok to do everything else before I install the new shower?I could also use some tool suggestions. I have a pretty basic home tool kit and a drill, and not much else. This isn't the only reno project I have planned, so it makes sense to get some tools rather than renting them or something.I have an extra set of hands, but he's got zero experience with this sort of thing. via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2wTtl3X
