Let me begin by saying that the most important thing here is that my wife and newborn daughter are ok, home and healthy.

Now, on to the part where I need some help:

My daughter was born last week. During the delivery, my wife spiked a fever and hit a few other markers that the doctors decided meant she had an infection. They pulled me from the delivery room to tell me that the hospital protocol dictated that because they were starting my wife on IV antibiotics, my daughter would have to be taken to the NICU for a minimum 48 hour observation and profalactic treatment of antibiotics.

Advance the story 48 hours and we are being discharged. The absolute, very last thing that the neonatologist said to me was "we dont take your insurance, so you're going to get a huge bill. When you get it you will need to call your insurance company and put them in touch with our payment providers." Me, "you have gotta be joking."

Anyone have a similar experience this? How much of a run around should I expect here? Does it matter that no one told me we were out of network with this until we were discharged?

If it helps, my insurance is BCBS. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
