I hope this an appropriate place for this.
I was tight with money my whole adult life. When I was struck by cancer around age 50, unable to work and facing a 60% probability of death within 5 years and a 30% chance of a normal healthy lifespan, I had, and took the luxury of taking time back for myself using my collected assets. I wound up with 7 years income to play with. Decided to used two years income taking my kids on a one year long trip overseas and now I will take 2 years income and time to travel the USA. If I am still alive I have a small nest egg of 2-3 years income to restart my life and income streams. I don't know how people without savings manage a devastating illness. Of course, half of it was luck due to the housing market.
