Due to changing my insurance policy I had to go to a different dentist for my 6 month checkup and cleaning. At my appointment the dentist came in, reviewed my x-rays and teeth, told me I don't have any cavities (yay) and my teeth & gums look healthy.

The dentist recommended a standard cleaning and an "irrigation". She explained that the "irrigation" is to kill bacteria around the gums and would not be covered by insurance. I questioned this because:

A.) Your mouth normally contains bacteria so even if they killed the bacteria it would be back in a few hours/days.

B.) She just said my gums were healthy.

The dentist started backpedaling and said it's for patients with deeper pockets in their gums to kill bacteria before the cleaning procedure so you probably can do without it, so they'll just do the cleaning. Then gave me what I believe was a pretty half-assed cleaning in what felt like just tracing my teeth with her scraping tool compared to other dental cleanings. Perhaps because I wasn't an overpaying customer. Needless to say, I won't be going back.

Moral of the story, be vigilant of upsells & addons.
