I have a dilemma now as the parent of an able-bodied 14 year old. He can start working now (we're in Iowa so if it is farm work or the grocery store he can legally do so) but I am trying to convince him (trying to convince myself that this would be the best solution) to volunteer that time instead. Instead of working 10 hours a week and 20 hours a week in the summer I want him to work an extra 5 hours on homework while in school and use the remaining time volunteering.

What does everyone think, would he be better working 3000 hours throughout high school at minimum wage (minus all taxes) or studying an extra 800 hours and volunteering 2200 hours for the added scholarship benefits.
