This may be a really basic question but I have never really planned finances before and am at a loss -- most information I read is mixed. I've seen similar questions on here but would like clarification.
I will be starting a job in a pretty expensive city; my salary will be ~65k. I've been a graduate student for a very long time so am used to living on very little, but I will be moving from an extremely affordable city and feel a little overwhelmed by the rent difference as I seek housing. I have read that it shouldn't go higher than ~30% of your income, which is still a lot, but also know I need to factor in things like cost of living, parking, pet fees, etc. I recently paid off my gargantuan student loans and have no other debt, am single with no children, and I am very cheap in my day to day. But then I also am nearly 30 and while I have some savings for emergencies (~35k), have never had a 401k or retirement or anything, and think I need to start on that.
So with that background, my question is: what range should I be actually seeking? My only hard-line is not having roommates. Advice I've received on my upper limit [in rent alone] has ranged from 1200-1700, which feels like a wide difference.
Thank you !
