Hello PF! I'm looking for some suggestions on how to properly go about my finances and repairing my credit score, I'm all ears.
A little backstory; I moved out and eventually got emancipated at 14. I've been on my own financially since then, which as I'm sure you can imagine, has not gone very smoothly. I grew up poor, so I know how to stretch a dollar, but have been working hard to get away from ever having to do that again. Ages 14-16 I was working, had cheap rent with my roommates, and was collecting a Social Security check every month (Survivor's Benefits). When the lease ended, my constant moving started, since I couldn't afford any places alone. Roommates, couches, etc. Slowly left behind all of my possessions or had them stolen, until I finally had a good thing going in a city I loved. It was my first alright-paying job, but I ended up moving an hour away about a month after I turned 18, and I had no car. Naturally, I applied absolutely everywhere for a car loan, and ended up getting screwed by Carmax/Santander. Ended up in about $7,000 in debt after it got repossessed, school loans (dropped out because I was trying to life), medical bills (because of course, insurance fell through), two overdrawn bank accounts and a maxed-out credit card later, my credit was destroyed.
Now, I'm about two weeks away from graduating an aviation program that'll lead me into a job at a good company, starting at $16/hr, with about as many hours as I could ask for.
Not having any credit history and having so much debt has made things very hard. I've attempted to get a secured credit card to start rebuilding, and I don't even qualify for that. This will be a lengthy process, and I'd like to have a plan to start as soon as possible.
