I recently went carless, which was great for 6mo until I relocated to Indianapolis for a job. I live close to work and walk most days but am getting stir crazy and want a vehicle to explore and visit family a couple hours away.

I'm also planning on buying a house in the next year, so I'd like to keep my debt to income ratio low.

I'm looking for something reliable and cost effective since I know virtually no one but co-workers within a two hour drive.

I can afford a more expensive vehicle but want to ideally stay in the $10-15k range. Was looking at used Ford escapes, Nissan rogues, and other small SUVs but am debating a lease as the payment could be low and not driving to work will mean milage will be low.

What are your thoughts? Lease or buy?! What are your favorite brands for reliability and cost effectiveness?
