So I booked a ticket for my mom to come visit me in the US. For background information, I am a US citizen while she is not (and she lives in Europe). The trip had a layover in YYZ (Toronto Pearson) and when my mom went to the first airport to depart from the country she currently lives in, the representative for the flight company (Austrian Airlines) told her that she needed a transit visa to transit to the US through Canada. I had done extensive research on the matter and came up with the conclusion that no visa was needed since it's just a layover. The representative told me to go on the Canadian Government website and check there and it turned out I was wrong.
So I booked my mom a last-minute ticket but I was hoping to get a refund (of any sort) for the first ticket. I booked through hop2 and their policy is that tickets are non-refundable but I was hoping if any of you frugal geniuses have any ideas on how to get some refund back (maybe miles credit, or maybe a refund for the flights that haven't departed yet as the whole trip had three flights or 2 stops). Should I contact them via phone and try to explain the situation?
This is the hop2's FAQs: http://ift.tt/2rnVQbt
Thank you
