This is more of a rant than a search for answers. I'm one of the youngest teachers at my school, and last year the majority voted to switch to composite health insurance where everyone gets the same rates regardless of age or current health. Today, our business manager tells me to check my email and that it may give me a heart attack when I read it. I ask her to elaborate a little and she says that the rates have increased for me. Sure, I expect a little bit of a rate increase each year because health insurance in the US is just silly right now. But when I opened the email and looked at the premiums, the same plan that I had last year cost twice as much. TWICE. AS. MUCH. So I talk with the business manager and she tells me to call the insurance agent because they've already talked about my situation and he has some options for me. I call the insurance agent and explain that I simply cannot afford to spend 3/4 of my paycheck on health insurance each month. He explains that he had talked to my business manager and that the best (read: ONLY) option for me is to sign up for Medicaid. They literally told me, "yeah we know that you got screwed over, but at least you might be able to go on welfare!" Thanks for screwing me over! /rant
