I had the ultimate frugal phone--the one work pays for. Verizon unlimited everything. Now due to budget constraints at work (oh the irony!) it's being taken away. I've been looking at different phones/plans and the cheaper (Republic, Google Fi, etc.) always have glowing reviews about how great they are. It's a lot harder to find the negatives. My wife has T-mobile, and the service sucks in this area. While I'm not convinced Verizon is necessary, I'm a bit hesitant to commit to the cheaper phone services. It seems too good to be true. What I need in my phone/service:

  • It has to work everywhere. I'm in Cub Scouts, and we need to have a phone with service pretty much everywhere possible. Verizon works everywhere in my area. T-mobile doesn't work just about anywhere.
  • The phone must have some sort of abuse/water resistant case available, or be water resistant itself. I used a LifeProof case for all my previous phones and it worked great. My phone will be abused.
  • Must have great data reception, I listen to a lot of streaming music, mostly streaming Pandora. I use about 2-3 GB a month.
  • I'm really hesitant to leave the iWorld, because I have a lot of apps I've paid for and some free ones I don't want to do without. At a minimum, I'd need the phone to have the ability to have MyFitnessPal, Habitica, Amazing Slow Downer (or equivalent for music transcribing), Guitar Toolkit (or equivalent for creating simple beats and having a metronome and chord encyclopedia), YNAB, endomondo, lightroom, nest, and audible.
