This doesn't seem like the right place to ask this but every search I did on reddit ended up here. I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask.

A uninsured friend recently had to have a liver biopsy. The hospital that did the biopsy punctured his lung resulting in a week stay in the hospital (3 days in ICU) a $35,000 bill for the hospital stay and a $4,000 bill for the biopsy itself (which failed to get a usable sample).

The failed biopsy was performed in the hospital complex in their "cancer center". When his lung was no longer collapsed they said they would go in through the chest tube and get a good biopsy then they changed their mind and said they wouldn't do the biopsy at all and recommended he get it done somewhere else.

So now he still needs a liver biopsy and has $40,000'ish in medical bills for nothing.... this doesn't seem right to me. Any advice I can pass on to him ?

He is poor, was working 3 part time jobs until he got sick now he has no income. He has managed to put money into an IRA for most of his working life and that is all he has to his name. Unfortunately in this state that IRA prevents him from getting help from Medicare/cade (I don't know the difference) or anyone really.
