I have to recommend the Puro Earphones. I bought them initially because I was concerned about hearing loss (they won't go up in volume beyond 86 dB) but they have also turned out to be reliable. I normally break earphones within six months because I got the cheaper variety found at the supermarket till but paying twice as much for something which has lasted much longer is well worth it.
Cost: $30.00
My second recommendation is the (discontinued) Ryobi Tek4 MP3 player if you can find one. I have two, one for music, one for audio drama depending on my mood.
It is extremely simple, it has no screen for viewing music files. You can organize your music when you load it onto the MP3 player so you know what's there.
This disadvantage is far outweighed by 2 factors.
- It is literally unkillable.
- The battery lasts for what feels like a month!
I also have the flashlight bit of the 'Tek4' line up and that's also very reliable.
I find the likes of the sansa clip to be easily wreckable. If you can pick up the Tek4 2nd hand somewhere (it's not sold anymore), then you almost definitely have a bargain.
