I feel like an idiot. I was filling up. I went inside to buy windshield washer fluid. I put the fluid in my car, closed the hood, got in, and started to drive away with the gas pump still attached to my car.

The hoses of gas pumps are designed with a coupling that disconnects the hose to avoid damage to the actual pump in the event of someone forgetting to remove the pump handle from their car.

I immediately realized my mistake and went inside to fess up to the gas station attendant. She said she wasn't sure what happens next. I left my contact info.

Will my liability insurance cover this? What happens next? I've heard in the past that this can potentially cost thousands of dollars.

Does anyone have any experience with this from either the perspective of the driver, or the gas station owner?

Thanks
