This is more of a reminder than anything. So we all know that bread machines are great. They make cheap bread (I calculated $0.60 a loaf), you can customize, make it warm, fresh, and delicious, and of course use it to mix and proof dough for other reasons (pizza, etc).
Well, I have never...and I mean NEVER...been to a thrift shop where there wasn't a bread maker for sale for $5-10. This is no exaggeration. Married couples always throw these on the registry, and then realize it takes up too much room in their house, so it's the first thing that gets donated.
Just make sure the baking pan is in there before you buy, as this may be missing.
Bread machines are amazing.
(side note - proofing. So any yeast-based baked good you make, whether it be bread, croissants, some biscuits, or pizza, requires a period of time where it's placed in a warm environment to let the yeast eat the sugar and make CO2, thus leavening the dough. You can do this with a heating register and a covered bowl, a sunny window and a covered bowl, or more easily and reliably: a bread machine. Most have a "proof only" function that will proof your dough so you can bake it in a conventional oven).
Happy baking.
