I recently moved from DC to Columbus, and I'm in the process of looking for a job. I'm experiencing a bit of sticker shock when I talk with employers because the salaries seem so low here.
In DC, I was a management consultant earning about $100K. But in Columbus, the comparable jobs that I've interviewed for are talking about salaries in the $60-70K range. I realize that the cost of living is a lot lower in Ohio than in DC, but I don't really know if this is normal or if these employers are just trying to lowball me.
Glassdoor and Payscale both suggest that I should be earning about $80K in Columbus, but I don't know if those estimates are accurate at all. Likewise, I'm not sure if cost-of-living calculators yield accurate comparisons between cities, since everyone has a different lifestyle.
Should I even be thinking about the Columbus job market in terms of how much I "should" be earning based on what I was making in DC? Or is it better to just forget about that anchoring number entirely and think of it as a totally separate job market? What are the best ways to figure out how much I'm actually worth?
