I’ve been poor for most of my life,I had food stamps for about four years in my 20s. When I turned 34, I got out of poverty, and the most I earned was $50k. I am now 40, earning $33k, which is within the poverty line for my area. I don’t want to get food stamps. I know my situation is temporary, but getting food stamps feels like a massive setback and that I’ll be poor again officially, with the associated stigma. My rent is very cheap, so I can save a good portion of my paychecks. I have thousands of dollars of debt, which most of my income is going towards. My credit score is too low to survive, so I have to work on increasing it by aggressively paying off debts. By the way, I’m working on certifications that will hopefully help me increase my income.
