Like the title says, now we owe this year which is something we are able to pay and will buy the whole situation is just really weird. I looked at her W-4 and she claimed the same 3 dependents I did and alas still nothing taken out. I didn’t notice last year since we got about $800 back but I got a new job in the past year which bumped us up into a higher tax bracket. I spoke with the payroll person responsible for her and she explained it that their payroll system doesn’t automatically deduct any amount unless your gross income reaches a certain threshold. She is a high school teacher and makes roughly 60k. This is her second year at this school and we have never encountered this in any of her previous jobs. Does this sound right? Is this a symptom of some greater problem within the district? We’ll be doing the IRS calculator thing so that this year an appropriate amount is deducted to avoid this the next go around.
