My mom who is visiting us in California from overseas on tourist visa, collapsed one day with brain internal bleeding from ruptured aneurysm and was immediately sent to ER. She was transferred to another medical center for immediate neuro surgery and thank God she is now slowly recovering without major stroke alike symptoms but expected to be in ICU for up to a week. She did purchase travel insurance in home country prior to the trip. The coverage limit is approx 76k USD which is pretty good normally but this unexpected medical emergency (as she has been healthy) and severity threw us off guard. By studying more I came to realize she might face hundreds of thousands (or even more) of medical bills I as California resident made sure I did not sign on any form related to financial except medical procedure consensus on her behalf. She is divorced, no self generated income, and financially supported by her children’s (including me) for basic life expenses. That is like $500 every month in total. To all the experts - what are her options.. financial aid from the hospital? Negotiation on the bill? There is no way she can afford the medical bill She doesn’t plan to live in the US, she doesn’t have any assets nor SSN in the US
