I found this sub and see that basically I’m an idiot for getting a financial advisor.
Until now I’ve kept my head down thinking that I shouldn’t mess too much and react to the market. Just send my $5k/month to him and let it work. My app got a new feature that shows me a breakdown of performance versus my contributions and I see the following:
Only 5.3% ROI since 2018
Net contribution vs total values:
Current $254k / $310k
Dec 2022 $254k / $254k <—- ouch
Dec 2021 $204k / $287k
Dec 2020 $144k / $193k
Wtf!!?!?? SP500 has almost doubled in that time. Vanguards stock index fund has also almost doubled. I do see the portfolio was hammered in 2022 like everyone else. Pardon my financial illiteracy but I thought this is what I was paying for. A couple of basic index funds are killing it!? Was this just a bad 2022?
I’m ready to invest the time and do this the right way and I guess become a Boglehead. Can anyone tell me if this situation seems off?
