How fucked am I? Pipe burst in unit above mine
I 23M woke up to multiple serious leaks in the cieling of my apartment from a burst pipe in the unit above mine. When i noticed it i tried knocking on the door above me and neighbors said that place was evicted. About a week ago the management put up signs around the complex that said we were going to have sub freezing temps and to leave your water dripping or your heat on. i guess they couldnt listen to their own sign on the empty units. Luckily i was there and noticed fairly quickly so i put my valubles away.
The thing is, i forgot to set the last part of my renters insurance up, and then never even paid it. Just totally left my mind, not that i couldnt afford it. This is my first time on a lease by myself, in a state across the country alone, and it just totally left my mind.
This happened 12 hours ago, and they still havent had someone out here to help me besides a shocked, good for nothing “maintainence” guy who took a bunch of pictures and made phone calls and told me someone would be out here shortly. Its still dripping in multiple places quite perfusely, tho the water is off in the apartment above me now. Im out of towels, buckets and have honestly given up. My fuse box and landline box are dripping water as well which i showed “maintaintence” guy who also seemed concerened but have just left me. I had all the fuses off but my phone died and it go so cold i turned them back on. Also is it possible that im getting some sort of chemical burn from this water? Might be contaminated with fiberglass from insulation or something? I had bright red rashes on my feet and legs where any of the water touched me and was super itchy. The cieling is split and buldging right above my bed and water is leaking there, also in my shower and bathroom. Ive honestly just kinda given up and took a nap on the couch.
Ok, sorry if i rambled. But considering none of this is any fault of my own will i still be held liable? I actually renewed my policy today, lol and it starts tomorrow but that sounds like, illegal haha. But it would also feel illegal for them to charge me for their own neglagence?
Bonus: I just had my car hit and run and totalled and got laid off a couple weeks ago, plus live where rent is quite expensive. Lol lifes testing me right now!
TL;DR Pipe burst above me in apartment and i fucked up and completely forgot about renters insurance. Am i in trouble? Any advice will help thanks!
