So a little back story. In 2020 I inherited a significant amount of money. I invested about 200k of it into the various ETFs that are generally suggested throughout the internet as I really knew nothing about investing. Mostly in VOO, VTI, QQQ, VXUS, and AGG with a very small mount directly into SCHA, KO and HD directly.
Now to the point, between 2020 and now I had a very significant gain, then a very significant loss, now every other day I basically have a gain and a loss of roughly the same amount. And yet everyone always suggests these are the go to "set and forget" ETFS for long term investment (which I am in for long term). But I'm not actually making any money. It's always a gain followed by a loss. Almost like daily clockwork. At this point I could've been making a steady 5% in a HYSA for months. What am I missing? Am I just not seeing the long enough timeline?
I've been on the fence about making this post for a while but Friday was another huge red day and I'm really concerned about building a nest egg for my very young children. I just don't understand why the total gain isn't ever increasing. I'm also auto reinvesting dividends. Which seem to basically go to losses.
